Largest state dating market
New South Wales is Australia's most populous state, but for dating apps it's essentially one city and everything else. Greater Sydney accounts for around 84% of the state's app users. If you're in Sydney, go to the Sydney page. This page covers the full state picture and the regional tier that Sydney guides ignore.
The Sydney dominance problem
Most NSW dating content is Sydney content with a state label on it. That's not useful if you're in Newcastle, Wollongong, or anywhere west of the Blue Mountains.
The honest picture: Tinder works across NSW wherever there's population density. RSVP has a real presence in Sydney and holds up reasonably in Newcastle and Wollongong. Everything else thins out quickly once you leave the metro area.
Regional NSW: what actually works
Newcastle is the only NSW city outside Sydney where app dating functions at reasonable scale. Population of around 320,000 in the broader area. Tinder has real depth. Hinge has a presence, thinner than Sydney. RSVP works for over-30s. The vibe is noticeably less transient than Sydney. Fewer people here for six months on a visa, which affects what people are looking for.
Wollongong has enough population (around 300,000 in the greater area) for Tinder to work. Proximity to Sydney means the pool gets augmented by people who commute or split time. RSVP is thin here.
Central Coast sits between Sydney and Newcastle geographically and in terms of app depth. Tinder works. Everything else is marginal.
Beyond those three: Orange, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga, Albury. Tinder is your primary option and the pool is thin by metropolitan standards. This isn't a criticism of the platforms, it's just the reality of lower population density. Someone in Tamworth using Hinge is working with a limited hand.

- Hinge: Sydney Inner West and Eastern Suburbs. Marginal outside metro.
- Bumble: Sydney inner city. Not worth prioritising in regional NSW.
